The artist Victor Fotso Nyie investigates the theme of identity through the reinterpretation of African traditions and symbolism. The title of the project I am the Other (Io sono l’altro) stems from the desire to reflect on the concept of otherness and the need to question what one observes and learns in a museum.
The artist uses clay and portraiture as a cognitive process of his own origins and as a means for a cultural re-appropriation that interweaves collective memories, ancient stories and forms with a personal and contemporary language.
The sculpture on display, Re-connexion, portrays the artist himself, from whose head anthropomorphic figures come to life: idols and African artefacts that glow within them with a golden patina that transcends the earthly materiality of terracotta to evoke a divine and ethereal dimension.
