The MAR is hosting a new event in the 52nd cycle of Cultural Encounters, organised by the Cultural Relations Centre.
The protagonist of the meeting is Flavio Caroli, who presents his book Come in uno specchio (Like in a Mirror) and is hosted by Anna De Lutiis.
The book starts from a discovery imagined as real: a secret diary discovered in the burial place of Sofonisba Anguissola, in the church of San Giorgio dei Genovesi in Palermo, four hundred years after her death.
Through this narrative suggestion, Caroli reconstructs the life and intimacy of one of the most important painters of the Renaissance, of whom many works are known but few personal aspects. The story moves between Cremona, Madrid, Genoa and Palermo and follows an intense and unconventional life.
In the book, the story is told in the first person, as if Sofonisba herself were speaking. Thoughts emerge on art, family, the Spanish court, travel and affections. The result is a story that combines historical research and narrative form, bringing to life the figure of a non-conformist artist between the 16th and 17th centuries.
