If music serves as the bridge between different cultures, then the synergy can be taken to the nth degree. The Constantinople ensemble’s experience, spanning almost thirty years, takes its starting point in world music and extends not only across space but also through time – into the history of peoples, personal experiences, long-established traditions and visions of the future.
Tabassian, an Iranian master of the setar, grew up in Canada and is a leading figure in Québec’s academic music scene. Cissoko, from Senegal, is the heir to an ancient lineage of griots; he lives in Saint-Louis but is an explorer of natural and cultural landscapes. Their collaboration, enriched by the adventurous and sensitive percussionist Patrick Graham, bridges the gap between ancient Persia and the Mandingo empires, broadening our perspective on them.
