One hundred years after the birth of the School of Mosaics, the Ravenna Academy of Fine Arts, which has been a state institution since January 2023, proudly perseveres with its missions: teaching, appraising the art of the ancient world and keeping in touch with the contemporary world that it began to undertake when it was first founded.

Organised as a university as it is at present, studies at the School of Mosaics take the form of a three-year course in which the teaching of mosaic art proceeds in parallel with that of other artistic disciplines such as drawing, painting, sculpture, engraving, photography and digital applications, including a two-year specialisation course in which mosaic art is studied in depth in its expressive possibilities and the many diverse ways in which works can be created in harness with micro mosaic techniques and 3D technology for use in architectural and urban contexts.

In a fruitful relationship between practical and theoretical sessions, students are given the opportunity of studying techniques and materials, conducting experiments and carrying out artistic research.

They are accompanied by lecturers such as Silvia Naddeo, Leonardo Pivi, Marco Santi and Daniele Strada, whose artistic practice is closely connected with mosaics, as well as artists engaged in collective and multidisciplinary work.

Research doctorates have also started to be made available in the 2024/2025 academic year, through which the Academy will be able to provide a unique and otherwise irreplaceable contribution to mosaic research, opening up new prospects and reaching new frontiers of knowledge.

This section intends to show some results from the richness and vitality of mosaic art that the Academy continues to achieve and to provide an idea of the creative atmosphere that pervades the students’ lecture and study rooms in a relationship of ongoing exchange, growth and personal research.
