A unique opportunity for emerging artists: the GAeM call is here to enhance your creative talent!
Through the GAeM, the MAR wants to give voice to young artists who relate to mosaic-understood as a technique, language, aesthetic or metaphor-both in its expressions related to historical tradition and in its more experimental and unconventional forms.
Participation is free, €3,000 is up for grabs. You can participate until May 15, 2025.
The competition includes: the awarding of prizes; the staging of group exhibitions in Ravenna in the spaces of the Classense Library; in Venice in the spaces of the historic furnace Orsoni Venezia 1888; in Roseto degli Abruzzi, in the spaces of the Cingoli Foundation; the creation of works in collaboration with the city’s mosaic production studios; the publication of a catalog; and meetings and moments of dialogue between artists and the public.
The competition is divided into three sections
– SECTION 1 – Works made with traditional materials and techniques
Works or projects using materials and techniques typical of the history of mosaics (e.g. marble, pebbles, glass pastes, glazes, ceramics applied on wooden, metal or stone supports) may be submitted.
Prize: € 3,000.00 in glass materials for mosaic making, offered by the historic Orsoni Venice Furnace 1888.
The winning work will become part of MAR’s collection of modern and contemporary mosaics.
– SECTION 2 – Works made with unconventional materials and techniques
Works or projects of works that explore mosaic in a conceptual and/or metaphorical way through different media (e.g. painting, sculpture, assemblage, collage, installation, photography, video, AI, software, performance) may be submitted .
Prize: € 3,000.00 offered by the Cingoli Foundation.
The winning work will become part of the MAR’s collection of modern and contemporary mosaics.
– SECTION 3 – Mosaic Residencies part of Constellation – Young Creative Connections
Art residency projects that dialogue with the city, its territorial specificity of mosaic and/or its history and current events may be submitted. Residency projects are required to include the creation of at least one mosaic work. For the realization of the mosaics, collaborations will be made available with studios and production workshops in the city and with the State Academy of Fine Arts of Ravenna in order to deepen the knowledge of mosaic technique and with a view to fostering an exchange of skills and sensibilities between different experiences and disciplines.
Preference will be given to proposals submitted by teams in which the artist and curator/curator collaborate. A maximum of two teams will be selected. For each team, the artist will be offered the possibility to reside in Ravenna for a period of at least 20 continuous days and the curator/curator will be offered the possibility to reside for a period of 7 days, even if not continuous. The teams will be supported by a tutor, identified within the MAR staff, who will accompany them in getting to know the city.
The residencies are expected to have a public return in the form of exhibition moments, meetings and through editorial productions curated by MAR-Museo d’Arte della Città di Ravenna. Following the selection, the residencies will take place in a period between July and August 2025, to be agreed with the mosaic workshops that will be involved.
The GA/ER Young Artists Association – Emilia-Romagna and the Ravenna City Council, guarantee for each residency :
