A leading figure in the contemporary art since the early 1970s, Chuck Close is internationally well-known for his portraits painted on a monumental scale and based on photographs. Close experimented a vast range of different techniques, processes and materials over the years, working with various collaborators till his using of mosaic technique. His first public work, Subway Portraits, featured a series of 12 mosaics and ceramic artworks, was commissioned by the New York Metropolitan Transportation Authority Arts & Design program in 2017.
The MAR mosaic exhibition, curated by Daniele Torcellini, presents Chuck Close’s new series of mosaic artworks as well as related works, such as prints, tapestries and photographs. The exhibit will also document the work of Mosaika Art and Design and Magnolia Editions in the realization of the works placed in the subway station at Second Avenue in New York City.
